Well it's time for a Gnu Edition of Wild Wednesday. Get it? Hu Huh? Gnu?? I crack myself up. Stop rolling your eyes.
Anyway, each week i've asked friends and co-workers for suggestions on animals to use. I'm stopping that after this lol. They don't ask for normal ones like, Lions, Tigers, Bears.......oh no.. they go for the weird ones!!! Like this weeks animal. A Wildebeest!!! WTH??? So from now on, i ain't asking for suggestions and next week we're getting something cute dammit. Anyway, here you are, everything you probably never wanted to know about........yes....a Wildebeest ::sigh::
1.Wildebeests are also known as Gnu's. They're name in Swahili is Nyumbu Ya Montu. Try saying that 3 times fast.
2.Wildebeests begin a migratory circle of 500-1000 miles every year. Migration begins after calving season.
3.Wildebeests are always on the move both day and night in search of grass and water.
4. They live in huge groups, but during mating season they split off into groups of around 150. Usually 5-6 bulls in each of these smaller groups defend territory as the females wander through. ( Reminds me of dollar night at the bar I used to go to a long time ago )
5. When these bulls meet up with each other at the edge of their territories they challenge each other by getting on their knees, with their foreheads flat on the ground and knock heads with each other at the base of the horns. (This reminds me of dollar night at the bar too, when the bar closes and the drunks can't stand up to fight so they do it from the ground)
6. If a baby Wildebeest loses it's mother in a crowd, it will attach itself to anything nearby, even a predator, a car, whatever.
7. Around 80% of the females calve within the same 2-3 week period. (A Yearly baby boom?)
8. A calve can run fast enough to keep up with the rest of the adult herd within just a few days of birth.
9. Wildebeests are very noisy. They always make moaning sounds and if they're disturbed they snort loudly. ( Boy these things really remind me of some men i know )
10. They are one of the few African Antelopes who have actually increased their range. In 1960 there were about 250,000, now there are around 1.5 million. (I'm not saying a word)
So what have we learned here today boys and girls? I think it's that men and Wildebeests have an awful lot in common and that Wildebeests may have possibly been in a bar at some point or some redneck went to Africa and brought back a few behaviors.
For me, every single time i hear the word Wildebeest, I think of Banzai on The Lion King. " I'm so hungry, i gotta have a Wildebeest"
